The Davison High School Bowling program hosted the third annual Mixed
Doubles Holiday Tournament for High School Bowler's at Richfield Bowl on Saturday,
January 3rd. The
tournament attracted 79 doubles teams from around the state (20
different schools), with teams
from Davison, Kearsley, Grand Blanc, Carman Ainsworth, Bay City,
Waterford,
Flint Northern, Lapeer West, Genesee, Flint Powers,
Flushing, Kenowa Hills, Flint Northwestern, Troy, Brighton, Hartland,
Oxford, Holly, Romeo and Swartz Creek
represented. The format consisted of 3 individual games per bowler and 2
Baker format games and then the field was cut to the top 48 teams, with
the top 16 teams getting a bye into the next round. The doubles teams were seeded according to total actual pinfall. The high qualifiers
for the tournament were Dean Tobias and Kelsey Smith from Grand Blanc with
an actual total of 1519. Dean had the high individual actual series and
game of the tournament
with a 690 actual series and a 279 game. The 2nd highest seeded team was
Evan Smith and Cortney Brilinski from Kearsley with a score of 1457.
Cortney led all girls in the individual scoring
with a 243 game and a 573 series. Once the seedings
were set, the format turned to a best 2 out of 3 with all games being
Baker format, total score did not come into play, just wins and losses.
The first round saw 6 of the 16 lower seeded teams winning their matches with the number 45 seeded team of Propst/Scott from Flint Northern knocking off the 20 seeded team of Stephen/Hikade from Kenowa Hills with games of 167,129 and 162. The 44th seeded team of Dawes/Stamm from Kearsely knocked of the 21st seeded team of Cichowicz/Fauls from Troy with games of 192 and 177. The 42nd seeded team of Koss/McInereny from Brighton also upset the 23rd seeded team of Burnett/Hamrow from Carman Ainsworth with games of 242, 152 and 181. The second round saw many upsets as the #1 seeded team of Tobias/Smith lost to the #32 seeded team of Allen/Cabello. . The other higher seeds to lose in this round were the #4, 5, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, and 15 seeds all losing. In the 3rd round (final 16) the #3 seeded team of Craney/Tobias lost to the #19 seed team of Cozart/Monahan. The other upsets were the #44 seeded team of Dawes/Stamm upsetting the 37th seeded team of Curtis/Teuber and the 32nd seeded team of Allen/Cabello upsetting the 16th seeded team of Shaker/Teeples. The other upset was the 42nd seeded team of Koss/McInerney upsetting the 7th seeded team of D'Angelo/Arbogast. The 4th round (elite 8) featured the team of Essy/Hale beating the team of Monahan/Cozart and the team of Dawes/Stamm defeating the team of Propst/Scott. Also advancing was the team of Allen/Cabello beating the team of Klinger/Rauh and the team of Koss/McInerney defeating the team of Brilinski/Smith. The final four now featured the 6th seeded team of George Essy and Danielle Hale bowling against their teammates from Kearsley in the 44th seeded team of Jessica Dawes and Doug Stamm. The other match featured the 32nd seeded team of Cory Allen and Yolonda Cabello from Carman Ainsworth against James Koss and Becca McInerney from Brighton. The two Kearsley teams battled each other to a 3rd and final match that was won by Dawes/Stamm by a final score of 185 to 161. The other match was settled in 2 games as the team of Koss/McInerney had games of 201 and 212 to advance to the finals. The final match featured the 42nd seeded team against the 44th seeded team. Dawes/Stamm came out in the first match strong and won by a score of 196 to 179. The second game was close all the way and the team of Dawes/Stamm hung on in the final frame for a 167 to 161 victory and the tournament championship. This is the 2nd year in a row that a team from Kearsley has won this tournament, with last years tournament being won by George Essy and Megan Lynch. The tournament winners received a plaque to display at the High school and medals. The 2nd place finishers also received a plaque and medals as did the high individual scorers.
