The Davison High School Bowling program hosted the second annual Mixed
Doubles Holiday Tournament for High School Bowler's at B's Bowling on Saturday, December 22nd. The
tournament attracted 48 doubles teams from around the state, with teams
from Davison, Kearsley, Grand Blanc, Carman Ainsworth, Bay City, Macomb,
Flint Southwestern, Flint Northern, Lapeer West, Genesee, Flint Powers,
Flushing and Swartz Creek
represented. The format consisted of 3 individual games per bowler and 2
Baker format games and then the field was cut to the top 24 teams, with
the top 8 teams getting a bye into the next round. The doubles teams were seeded according to total actual pinfall. The high qualifiers
for the tournament were Joey Hoover and Kelly Harwell from Davison with
an actual total of 1752. Joey had the high individual actual series of the tournament
with a 732 actual series. The 2nd highest seeded team was Chad Hoover
and Samantha Deaton with a score of 1716. Samantha led all girls in the individual scoring
with a 236 game and a 686 series. The highest actual game for the boys
was a 258 actual shot by Garrett Gauthier from Lapeer West. The
highlight of the tournament was the 2nd Baker game of qualifying when
the team of Sam Smarszc and Allie Goodman from Flushing shot a 298
actual Baker game that helped them to qualify 5th for the tournament. Once the seating
were set, the format turned to a best 2 out of 3 with all games being
Baker format, total score did not come into play, just wins and losses.
The first round saw 2 of the 8 lower seeded teams winning their matches with the number 24 seeded team of Ward/Mcquire from Flint Southwestern knocking off the #9 seeded team of Houston/Scott with games of 189,198 and 211. The 23rd seeded team of Acton/Eckel from Lapeer West knocked of the 10th seeded team of Odykirk/Whitham with a 222 game in the final baker game, those were the only 2 upsets of the first round. The second round saw 3 upsets as the #24 seed team of Ward/Mcquire upset the #8 seed team of Sutherland/Tobias with games of 193 and 226. The number 13 seeded team of Kendall/Spencer knocked of the #4 seeded team of Thorpe/LeClair with both doubles teams from Bangor John Glenn High School. The number 12 seeded team of Block/Fylling from Bangor John Glenn knocked of the 5th seed of Smarscz/Goodman from Flushing with games of 201,256 and 215. The rest of the higher seeds (1,2,3,6, & 7) all won their 2nd round matches. In the 3rd round (final 8) the doubles team of Kendall/Spencer knocked off the doubles team of Fylling/Block from Bangor John Glenn with games of 180 and 208. The team of Hoover/Deaton knocked off the doubles team of Snyder/McInerny from Davison with scores of 225,206 and 257. The 3rd round saw the doubles team of Lynch/Essy from Kearsley catch fire and defeat the doubles team of Harger/Harger from Carman Ainsworth with games of 242 and 224. The 4th round featured the #1 seed against the #13 seed and the #2 seed against the #3 seed. The #1 seeded team of Hoover/Harwell defeated the #13 seed team of Spencer/Kendall with scores of 212 and 200 to move into the finals. The #3 seeded team of Lynch/Essy defeated the #2 seeded team of Hoover/Deaton with scores of 215 and 256. The finals featured the #1 seeded team of Joey Hoover and Kelly Harwell from Davison against the #3 seeded team of George Essy and Megan Lynch from Kearsley. The Davison team had not lost a match game all day and started the match with a 245 to 167 victory but the Kearsley team fought back for a 202 to 162 victory and set up the final game for the tournament championship. The Kearsley team came on strong and finished with a 238 to 181 victory and the Tournament Championship. The tournament winners received a plaque to display at the High school and medals. The 2nd place finishers also received medals as did the high individual scorers. The 3rd and 4th place finishing teams will also receive medals.
